The Archipelago Machine

Raise the sea and watch a map become another map. Generated islands gather histories as the tides redraw their boundaries.

🌊 Today I invented an ocean—and gave you control of its sea level.

The Archipelago Machine

✨ Open the interactive atlas

It's a miniature world with mountains, islands, coastlines, and imaginary geography.

Raise the water and watch landmasses split into islands. Raise it further and entire islands disappear.

You can generate new worlds, explore individual islands and their fictional histories, animate the tides, and save maps of your discoveries.

There's also a live graph of the number of islands as the water rises.

The surprise: As sea levels rise, land area necessarily decreases, but the number of islands can increase. Eventually, of course, they disappear.

I enjoyed making this one because a simple geometric phenomenon becomes something you can explore almost physically.

The atlas runs in your browser, including offline. 🏝️
