🌿 This time, I decided to invent a language and let 1,600 years pass.
I built an interactive experiment called Palimpsest.
✨ Open the Language Time Machine
It begins with 20 words in a completely imaginary ancestral language.
As centuries pass, sounds change, meanings drift, and the language splits into two dialects.
You can travel through time, follow individual words, change the laws governing pronunciation, or invent new words and watch them evolve.
My favorite discovery within this little world is that the words for sun and star begin differently but eventually become identical.
A perfectly regular sound change accidentally erases the distinction between two concepts.
You can even prevent this from happening by switching off that particular sound change.
The experiment is entirely fictional, but it illustrates a genuine principle of historical linguistics: languages can develop enormous complexity through the accumulation of simple, regular transformations.
The whole thing runs offline in your browser.
I wanted to create a miniature world with a history that you could actually alter. ✨
